Classic Club Sandwich with Ham, Turkey, bacon, Swiss & Cheddar, and Homemade Honey Mustard


The club sandwich is one of those American staples that never goes out of style. It is crisp, layered, and endlessly satisfying. A sandwich that knows what it is doing and does not need to prove a thing. It feels just as at home on a lunch counter menu as it does on your own kitchen table.


What I love about a good club sandwich is its quiet confidence. There is no single showpiece ingredient. It is the combination that makes it memorable. Toasted bread, layers of deli meat, a swipe of something creamy, slices of tomato, fresh lettuce, a bit of bacon, and cheese. It is balanced, humble, and filling. When done right, it is deeply nostalgic.

For this version, I used roasted turkey and smoked ham along with slices of both sharp cheddar and mellow Swiss. Each bite brings something a little different. There is the savory depth of the meats, the creaminess of the cheese, the brightness of the tomato, and the crunch of crisp lettuce and toast. The honey mustard is my own simple blend of yellow mustard, mayonnaise, and honey. Just three ingredients that come together in a smooth, sweet, and tangy sauce that ties everything together beautifully.


When I photographed this sandwich, I was out of bacon. I considered holding off, but then I thought, that’s real life. Even without it, the sandwich still tasted wonderful. That said, I absolutely recommend adding bacon when you can. The smoky, salty crunch adds a richness that rounds it all out.


The club sandwich carries with it a piece of American culinary history. The earliest known version showed up in the late 1800s at the Union Club in New York City, which is where it gets its name. The sandwich quickly gained popularity and began appearing on menus in hotels, railcars, and small-town cafés across the country. It became a familiar favorite, served to travelers, families, and anyone looking for a hearty midday meal.

There is something timeless about it. A club sandwich is easy to assemble and endlessly adaptable, yet it still carries the charm of a more gracious time. A time when people paused for lunch and took care in how they prepared a simple meal.


This is the kind of recipe I return to repeatedly. It is unfussy, flavorful, and dependable. Perfect for an afternoon on the porch, an easy lunch at home, or a casual meal shared with family. Pair it with sweet tea, kettle chips, or even a scoop of potato salad.

Classic Club Sandwich with Ham, Turkey, Bacon, Swiss & Cheddar with Simple Homemade Honey Mustard

Simple Homemade Honey Mustard


Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise


Instructions
  1. Whisk honey, mustard, and mayo together in a small bowl until smooth and creamy.
  2. Store in the fridge for up to one week.
  3. Double recipe if you would like more Honey Mustard


Sandwich Ingredients (Makes 2 Sandwiches)


Ingredients
  • 6 slices of white or wheat sandwich bread, toasted
  • 4 slices of roasted turkey breast
  • 4 slices of smoked deli ham
  • 4 slices thick-cut bacon, cooked until crisp
  • 2 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 leaves romaine or butter lettuce
  • 4 slices vine-ripened tomato
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons homemade honey mustard
  • Salt and black pepper to taste


INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Toast the bread - Toast all six slices of bread until golden and sturdy.
  2. Layer One - Spread honey mustard on the first slice of toast. Add one lettuce leaf, the turkey, and one slice of Swiss cheese. Place the second slice of toast on top, spread with more honey mustard on the top-facing side.
  3. Layer Two - Add tomato slices, a small pinch of salt and pepper, the ham, and crispy bacon. Top with one slice of cheddar cheese and a second lettuce leaf. Spread honey mustard on the inside of the last toast slice and place it on top.
  4. Serve - Gently press down, skewer with sandwich picks, and slice into halves or quarters. Serve with kettle chips, a cold salad, or a crisp pickle.
